Presto, Perfect Sound Experimental film | color | 6'0'' | Netherlands / Belgium | 2006 © Manon de Boer Manon de Boer's film "Presto, Perfect Sound" shows the composer and violinist George van Dam playing Béla Bartok's sonata "Presto". De Boer film and recorded George van Dam playing the whole piece six times. In the attempt to attain a perfect sound tape, she gave him the six recordings and asked him to reconstruct the Bartok piece to make a perfect audio object. Then de Boer synchronized the film images with the sound tape. Thus the jumping of images coincides with the pauses on the music. While permitting the audio sequence to dictate the screen image, de Boer inverts the predominant tradition in cinema of image on sound. The film is a reflection on the relationship between sound and image. It offers intense reflection of the moment of creative concentration. Recorded at Studio 4 de Flagey in Brussels on the 13th of August, commissioned by LUX and Frieze Projects, with help from the British Arts Council and the Culture 2000 programme of the European Union. Frieze projects in association with Cartier. Manon de Boer (°India) lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. She makes films, videos, installations, publications and she teaches at KASK. She`s part of the production-distribution platform named Auguste Orts. "The work of Manon de Boer revolves around the portrait and the memory. Image and biographical account are often separated to question the nature of a portrait, to the one who is portrayed and the spectator." Recent group exhibitions include “Don Quijote”, Witte de With, Rotterdam, (2006), “Documentary Creations”, Kunstmuseum, Lucerne (2005) and ”Nederland niet Nederland”, Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (2004). De Boer`s film Sylvia Kristel - Paris (2003) has been included in the International Film Festival, Rotterdam, and was awarded the Prix Georges de Beauregard at Marseille in 2004. Her film Resonating Surfaces (2005) won the Prix Marseille Espérance at the International Competition FID, Marseille (2006) and the prize for best experimental film at the festival Curtas Metragens Vila do Conde, Portugal. It’s currently shown at the Biennale in Venice. Artist statement George van Dam: "In the film, the image and sound is always synchronized because it was recorded and filmed at the same time. During the filming we did six takes in total. In the montage process, Manon proposed to me to edit the sound in the most perfect way as it is done nowadays - one takes the best parts of the different takes and edits them together in a way that the cuts are inaudible. The image from the different takes that I used in the sound-edit was subsequently very precisely again linked together to the sound. The result is that one can see the editing that happened in the sound montage, but one does not hear it. When watching the film, one really sees what one hears, and yet the sound is continuous and perfectly smooth whereas the image (also) jumps at the edit points in the audio part. The image relates to the different takes in a perceivable way, and thus creates a kind of almost independent tension in the time-space, although it being intrinsically linked to the source of sound."
