The Netherlands Media Art Institute: Presentation,
Collection and Research.
Ever since the founding of the video gallery Montevideo in 1978,
the Netherlands Media Art Institute has been specialised in electronic
art and especially video art which seeks the creative possibilities
and properties of the medium itself. The Netherlands Media Art Institute
today is active in 3 core areas: presentation, collection and research.
Among the tasks of the Presentation department are exhibitions,
in and outside our own building. The Collection department bears
responsibility for collecting/selecting, distribution and preservation
of the collection. We perform conservation services for important
video collections in Dutch museums and investigate methods and technologies
for the long-term preservation of installations and video works.
Through the Research department's Artists in Residence program,
the Institute supports artists by developing new software and new
applications. These activities take place in cooperation with international
partners. Finally the educational department supports all our activities,
organises guided tours, provides lesson packets and lectures for
secondary and tertiary education, and coordinates workshops and
guest lectures in The Netherlands and other countries. Through all
these diverse functions, the Netherlands Media Art Institute fulfils
its role as the intermediary institution for the media art sector,
a middle-man building bridges between artists, art institutions
and the public, and a center of expertise that makes its resources
available to these groups. The collection of the Netherlands Media
Art Institute now comprises over 1800 works, and is the beating
heart of the Institute. The oldest tapes date from 1970, and the
past years we added about 50 works yearly to the collection of which
75% qualifies for distribution. In addition, there is an impressive
reference collection. Since its inception the Institute has maintained
the possibility of open submissions and over 300 unsolicited works
are sent to us yearly. Other titles are selected by scouting at
festivals and following the careers of artists whose works were
already included in the collection. The history of media art shows
that from the very beginning international exchange was an essential
part of this art form. Now we distribute yearly almost a thousand
works from our collection to 36 countries and we are preparing for
the future, as on-line distribution through streaming selected works
directly from our servers will be possible soon.

Michael Brynntrup bases his series on self directing of the body on internet. The erotic self-portrait vanishes in an anonymous and repetitive frame. Isabell Spengler transposes into cinematographic language a performance of the feminist pop group "Larry Peacock". Lior Shamriz permutes the voices of three friends meeting by chance in the street, creating a strange and sombre perception of the other. Katarzyna Kozyra directs herself in a pop video, and plays with the clichés of feminine and masculine. Nina Lassila illustrates the phrase of Bourdieu stating that genre is a "lived ideology". Cabello/Carceller replay sequences taken from a Hollywood film, and explore the dynamics of power and of subordination which lurk behind the structures of genre in the capitalist model of society. Aasa Elzén and Markus Wetzel create an androgynous character played by one or by the other, it doesn't matter which, man or woman. Nicolas Jenkins films Breyer P-Orridge and his partner Lady Jaye who have undergone a series of plastic surgery operations to eliminate their physical differences, and create a new genre, the pandrogyne. With Almagul Menlibayeva, young urban Kazakh women eat a sheep's head in a restaurant in Almaty. This meal provokes their transformation; they become supernatural creatures of the steppes.

Carlos Pazos directs a black Madonna standing besides the only known albino gorilla in the world.
Isabelle Levenez grasps the awkwardness of a family meal in which the silent protagonists are naked and wear masks. Gautam Kansara and his grandmother listen to traditional Indian songs and become their protagonists. Emanuelle Antille questions family relations and the roles each one plays, around the notions of sacrifice and of filial love. Matthew Murdoch films himself during a phone conversation with his father alongside Hadrian's wall. Ryan Tan concentrates on one of the archetypes of mother-son relationships: reproaches around the dinner table. Asa Mori recreates some strange characters at teatime. Marko Mäetamm draws cruel sketches in which he exorcises the dilemma of being an artist and having a family. Nicholas and Sheila Pye direct each other as a couple facing a spirit announcing the death of one of the two. Sara Rajaei, by using the "deja-vu" notion, films sequence shots of characters in a family living room full of souvenirs. Hans Op de Beeck creates a strange group portrait. By removing the sense of colours, he underlines the peculiar fixity of posing and of generational gaps. Yu-Ching Tseng films a room in which a motionless child is standing while there is an alternate presence of either the mother or the father in the background. Antonella Faretta follows John Giorno to his native village where he recites the poem "Just say no to family values" while an old woman observes from the background.

Ben Pointeker questions the essence of the gaze and uses cinematographic
language as a reminiscence. The non-discernible fills the frame
of the image, the signification is that which appears. Lea Monika
Zamiecka describes the feeling of loss, and metaphorizes the need
to "go home". By the means of the images themselves, this
search becomes cinematographic and plastic. Birgit Rathsmann produces,
taking photographic images as a starting point and according to
the codes of film noir, a nocturnal meeting in a park in Brooklyn.
Digital snow gradually invades the frame of the image. Ben Rivers
films thousands of people climbing a mountain. The destination and
the object of their ascent remain undecidable; between a wandering
and an uncertain pilgrimage. Mareike Bernien enlarges in fragments
extracts of a film, and edits a sound track which seems to come
from an autoguide. Emptied of its narrative connections, the asymmetric
relation between image and sound becomes apparent. Knut Asdam films
the search for possible combinations beween narrative and staging.
Three young adults fight violently in a recurring manner, apparently
with no reason. The shooting locations, in Salzburg, imprinted with
a heavy past, seem to generate this violence. Nicolas Provost films
the city of New York as material: its passers-by, its cops. The
documentary image produces a fiction through an editing which is
simultaneously cinematographic and choreographic. Neil Beloufa creates
a science fiction documentary where the interviewees imagine the
future and speak of it in the present.
