Mateo Mate shows an American general reciting the recipe for the
Thanksgiving turkey. Erica Scourti compiles and twists a series
of stereotyped speeches from Hollywood films in order to create
a rhetorical piece on human condition. Paul Rowley and David Phillips
examine the ideas of governance, or social order and of collective
representation, through revisiting the Soviet space program of the
1960s and inspired by the theories of Hobbes on the body politic.
Mark Boswell reinterprets, with Godard, Camus, Dada and Scorsese,
the Saint-Petersburg paradox, a mathematical theory of the C18th,
describing a casino game with attractive winnings but the entry
price of which is unattainable. Igor Krenz documents the eruption
on Polish television in 1985 of slogans calling for boycott of the
elections, the result of pirating of a TV antenna by a group of
students. Mario Navarro calls before the camera Stafford Beer, father
of modern cybernetics, and of a pioneering accounting and information
control system that Allende wanted to commission from him in 1971.
With Philipp Doering we follow a woman in Berlin, caught between
images of her past in the Red Army Factions and those of the football
World Cup in 2006. Daya Cahen, through archive images, meets Yevgeni
Jugashvili, Stalin's grandson, whose memory he worshipped, although
the man of iron never wanted to meet him and sacrificed his son,
Jugashvili's father, during the Second World War.

This session is designed to discover two specific approaches to documentary films, two world visions that bear the stigmas of contemporary history. Pavel Medvedev films a community in Siberia that, paradoxically, maintains its social ties despite its destroyed environment where remainders of a nowadays obsolete technology have been dispersed. The trajectory of the landscapes becomes those of existence itself. In evoking a country and its historical memory, Felipe Guerrero poetically draws an intimate portrait of contemporary life in Colombia. The Super 8 grain makes the reality of a country, immerged in an endless war, vibrate. It is as if reality were pierced by the past, just like the monumental remainders of satellites crashed in the immensity of the Siberian landscape that Medvedev has filmed. The satellites resemble those traces and memories of violence that transpire in the pictures filmed by Felipe Guerrero. A voiceover, in the form of a revolted paradise, emerges and grows, while pieces of the world literally precipitate down the earth, and while vibrations of the image celebrate the remainders of the world.

The films and videos of this session question narrative forms. Reduced to one single protagonist, the narration shows its own structures, the "dispositif" of projection and identification. Noam Toran and Onkar Kular suggest three interpretations for the theme of the approaching death: between a traditional cinematographic narration and an ambiguous space of visual representation. The rigor of the camera settings and the exploration of narration in the works of Nicolas Wackerbarth reflect the interior existence of a woman facing the emptiness of her life. Adel Abidin films a Western man who becomes a fundamentalist. Set between fantasy and reality, the film visually evokes the modern conflict between emptiness and the necessity to find a meaning. Sahraa Karimi is interested in a possible reversal of the existence of a young and lonely woman, who, by accident, steals the intimate picture of a stranger. Ansuya Blom evokes the confrontation between a person and a phobic space experience and that literally defines what is beyond the private sphere. John Menick introduces a man who speaks about his obsession for films that are centered around the topic "the last person on earth" – films that deal with a person who wakes up a morning to discover that he or she is the last inhabitant of the world.

The films and videos of this session explore different ways that generate fiction, such as the possible variations of writing that question the combination of reality and fiction. Messieurs Delmotte self-portrays himself with cats – a heroic and absurd battle between the artist and animals. Annette Stav Johanssen creates a masochistic apparatus that produces narration. A solitary drama starting off with the rules of Aristotelian dramaturgy and that exposes the medium as an indication for illusion in the manner of Brecht. Eleanor Hawkridge transposes a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson and develops the monologue of a girl, who lives isolated in a tower while compulsively knitting. Jorunn Myklebust Syversen starts off with fragments taken from different tragedies by Shakespeare and puts them together into a dialogue with an ineluctably tragic ending. Bidzina Kanchaveli shows a man who has just enough room for himself and for a goose, while seven pale and naked women are trying to penetrate his space. Gregg Smith shows two men both in an office and in empty spaces as they are engaged in a common project with an unknown objective. Through this specific intimacy emerges a battle for power. Erwin Olaf films two women in an allusive and partial narrative setting, where the sound track is the real bearer of signification. Ran Slavin films Alenbi Street in Tel Aviv, a street that seems to have its own memory – the one of a murder witnessed exclusively by mannequins in a showcase. Claudia Dworschak re-transcribes recordings by the criminal police. Through the crude and distanciated words of a pimp, the body of the other appears like a mere commodity. With Fiona Tan we follow an old man who lives in a deserted building, the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. In his monologue, a play between reality and fiction unfolds.
