Repetitions and Variations. Repetitions
and Variations is a program of video where the drive for narrative
has been subverted, subsumed or abandoned. Each work embodies a
radical structuring and restructuring of the moving image. Cory
Arcangel uses the visual mash-up, where two music videos are shown
side by side, to meld and abrade sound and image both physically
and psychically. Martha Rosler films a mechanical militaristic singing
doll, whose predestined performance determines the duration, structure
and meaning of the work. Takeshi Murata's video is a luscious psychotropic
journey into the joys of abstraction. Michael Bell-Smith's videos
explore the attraction of repetition and the dynamics of visual
seduction. Shana Moutlon's videos fracture narrative, allowing the
viewer to float off into a dream-like consciousness that, as in
dreams, can be both pleasurable and anxiety producing. Ken Jacobs'
reworking of early cinema reflect upon the fundamental form and
content of the moving image. His analysis is passionate and metaphorical,
producing profound meanings that are at once historical, contemporary,
and powerfully visceral. Founded in 1971, Electronic Arts Intermix
(EAI) is a nonprofit arts organization that is a leading international
resource for video and media art. A pioneering advocate for media
art and artists, EAI's core program is the distribution and preservation
of a major collection of over 3,500 new and historical video works
by artists. For over 37 years, EAI has fostered the creation, exhibition,
distribution and preservation of video art, and more recently, digital
art projects.

Mario Opazo reinterprets fragments of "Kill Bill" by using variations on light, time and space. He explores the structure of the image and asserts editing as the sole signifier. With "Gowar", Jon Mikel Euba elaborates a hybrid video, with references to both Godard and Warhol. Mike Hoolbloom portraits Collin Campbell, a major artist in the Canadian scene of the 70's, a master of drag and provocation. More than a simple portrait of an artist from his time, the film is a captivating reflection on the desire for images and the power they exert.

Vasco Araujo films a little girl digging up bones in a garden and placing them in a house that seems deserted. Oscar Munoz's work is a self-portrait that questions the passing of time. Julieta Hanono films the secret place where she was imprisoned at the age of 16 at the time of the military dictatorship in Argentina. The video operates a return to a blind point, the one of her own story. Elise Florenty sets two videos side by side, showing that which destroys and that which resists, in reference to the history both past and present of Argentina. Mario Opazo's video is based on the gesture of burying and digging up. At the term of this process, a crate is filled up with sand, and the word «oblivion» is written on it. Christelle Lheureux weaves together the story of a soap opera broadcast on Vietnamese television and the tale of a young woman from Saigon who watches it. The gaps and points of intersection between these two stories bring the collective, communist imagination into confrontation with the daily life of a city in rapid expansion.

The three works of this session suggest both an imaginary and real
research and trip, always based on the filmaker's/narrator's interiority.
With Roy Samaha, the video becomes a tool for the introspection
of the past. Through the use of VHS recordings of his childhood,
he explores the places and the memory of things. Siew-Wai Kok films
the visual gap between two diametrically opposed cities, Buffalo
in New York State and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. A windy night before
a rain fall, a camera-eye that catches an awaiting, a tension, and
time. Mauro Santini films the history of a lost love and of a trip
to Rio de Janeiro, the memory and the passing of time, as well as
the search for self-knowledge. A woman sitting on a balcony in a
hotel in Lisbon gazes at a ship that sails away.
