A screening dedicated to rare and surprising contemporary animated films, most of which are directed by visual artists. Ozan ADAM creates a primitive animation emphasizing the plasticity of forms. Tomomichi NAKAMURA shows ants and a crow becoming symbolic intermediaries between a strong man, a short man and a pregnant woman. Vera Klute transforms the ordinary into the absurd. J Tobias Anderson reanimates extracts from film noir movies and points out the repetition and the wearing down of language. Diego DEL POZO BARRIUSO speaks about women and men submerged by things missing and the loneliness they experience in their work environment. Xenia LESNIEWSKI gives form to her fears and then animates them. Cecilia LUNDQVIST illustrates the inner thoughts of a house wife on the alternative uses of her work tools. Peter BURR shows the insane collapse of a world inhabited by sad clowns. Martha COLBURN illustrates the age-old fight between the weak and the strong. Federico SOLMI shows us a world without hope in a satire of the current economic crisis. Ulu BRAUN lays out a panorama spanning from Rotterdam to Sydney, gathering the symptoms of our society. Félix DUFOUR-LAPERRIÈRE assembles, juxtaposes and manipulates animated structures, little architectures that follow and overlap each other, springing up little clouds. Vladimir TODOROVIC deploys auto-generating processes and adapts a novel into abstract visual and sonorous forms.

Mario PFEIFER revisits the structures of an industrial building photographed in 1974 by Lewis Baltz, an american artist represented in “New Topographics”, a key exhibition in the history of photography. Peter DOWNSBROUGH films the Citroën garage at the Place d’Yser in Brussels, the legacy of an industrial architecture common to the inter world wars years. Hans OP DE BEECK shows us remembered spaces; not any specific sites, but the abstract, archetypal settings, as the common denominator of the many similar public places he has visited and experienced. Elise FLORENTY combines architecture, body and language, drawing inspiration from a poem by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Sasha PIRKER films “Pearl M. Mackey Apartment House” in Los Angeles, built in 1939 by the architect Rudolph M. Schindler, colleague of Frank Lloyd Wright. Using a travelling shot, Jaime DE LA JARA brings out the complexity of an otherwise banal facade. Peter GIZZI et Natalia ALMADA, respectively filmmaker and poet, film the portrait of men and environments in Tanger.

Marina GIOTI slightly modifies a propaganda film created under the dictatorship of the Colonels in 1970’s Greece. Romana SCHMALISCH combines current images of Volgograd with audio extracts from a Soviet propaganda film ‘The Promise’ in which Stalin plans et creates ‘his city’, reborn as Stalingrad. Teresa SOLAR ABBOUD goes back to the sites where the film Lawrence of Arabia was shot in 1962 and where, at that time, an oasis had been built, which lived on after for more than 50 years. Magnus BÄRTÅS documents the history of the South Korean film star, Choi Eun-Hee, and her director husband, both kidnapped in 1978 by the North Koreans, with the aim of offering them a generous filmmaking budget. François BUCHER retraces a real event that happened during a theatre seminar at the University of Antioquia in Medellín, Colombia, where two students doing a project on Jean Genet decide to play a hoax – an armed kidnapping.

LIU WEI films the silence of passers-by 20 years after the protests at Tiananmen Square in China. While the memory of the deaths is becoming blurred, the impossible remembrance is being replaced by illusion. Apichatpong WEERASETHAKUL slowly films the interior spaces of houses in a village. They are all deserted, apart from one, wherein we see a group of young soldiers digging a hole in the ground. Three men recite a letter addressed to Uncle Boonmee, which tells the story of a small community where all the houses have been abandoned. Eija-Liisa AHTILA recounts an incident which took place during the Algerian war. Reacting to the atrocities committed, two young Algerian boys murder their friend, a French boy of the same age. The film starts in the present day as Death enters the house of the Poet. She starts to investigate these past events, which gradually become interwoven with the present moment.

Phillip WARNELL films the philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy after his transplant experience, meditating on the history and integrity of his body and on the foreigner travelling from one river bank to the other, strange body stranger. Vianney LAMBERT retraces the anonymous narrative of an exiled young man. Bouchra KHALILI confronts the real life experience of immigration with the flatness of geographic maps and uncovers another map of Africa – made of the misunderstanding that burdens this continent which “have not been sufficiently represented in history”. Gil & Moti act on the border between public and private, in the spheres of art and society, dealing with themes of integration and exclusion. Galina MYZNIKOVA et Sergey PROVOROV film a handful of men in a snow-covered landscape who test their physical force against nature’s. United side by side, they extract themselves from this hostile environment through a sort of hesitant ballet, a strange choreography. The film intitled “Despair “ (Otchajanie), describes the mechanisms of a world governed by crows.

: Le procès d'Oscar Wilde | Experimental fiction | dv | color | 1:08:00 | France / Lebanon | 2009 [•]

© Christian Merlhiot

In the garden of a villa facing the Mediterranean Sea, a man works on the Arabic translation of Oscar Wilde’s trial. Under the light of a summer night and throughout the following nights, the various protagonists of the trial come to see him. He plays each role, one after another and puts the aesthetic and political stakes of that struggle back into play. This verbal battle then appears as the last opus - precious and ferocious - of the English dandy.
