Zeno Van Den Broek, "Paranon"

To close the thematic session "Multitudes" on Friday 28 February at 8pm, the multimedia performance "Paranon" explores the universe of sinusoidal waves.

Paranon consists of two parallel compositions in counterpoint, one visual and the other sonic, based on the properties of sine waves. The programmed sine wave generators used by Zeno van den Broek make it possible to generate interference, phase shift and frequency alternation with great precision. Counterpoint writing creates unexpected tension and results between the initial sine wave and the subsequent repetitions. The two parallel compositions introduce to pure sound beauty and explore the richness of sound wave collisions, creating visual and sonically-induced events.

Daan Couzijn, "Blood"

To close the "Vague Stars" session on Saturday 29 February at 8pm, the performance by Daan Couzijn questions an identity that has become addictive, a state of desire and otherness.

Couzijn is a visual artist and musician. His work questions how external influences, especially digital influences, shape us. Each idea, each creation, is a combined effort of everything we have witnessed and experienced. In addition to his work as an actor and performer, he performs live with his own music. He creates minimalist electronic music combined with his own voice.

Daan Couzijn (Haarlem, 1994) is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Amsterdam. After having studied singing at the Conservatory of Music in Rotterdam, he continued his studies at the Institute of Performative Arts in Maastricht where he graduated with a BA in Performance Art. Concluding his education, Couzijn graduated in June 2019 from a Post-Graduate program (Radical Cut-Up department) at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam, where he received the title of MA in Fine Art and Design. Couzijn is a creative all-rounder - musically skilled with a very strong eye for visual aesthetics who focuses on authenticity, existentialism and the way external influences (in particular digital influences such as social media) shape us. Often using the richness of the internet and the possibilities of technology as an inspiration for his works, Couzijn believes that every idea, every creation, is a combined effort of everything we've ever witnessed and experienced. Besides working as a professional actor/performance artist, he performs live with his own music under the pseudonym of Cousin. As Cousin, he creates minimalistic, electronic music combined with his own angelic vocals. More recently he also started exhibiting several audio/visual- ánd kinetic installation works, often using video and other digital media as an expressing tool.

TWIXT is the brand new duo-project of Billy Roisz and Dieter Kova?i? a.k.a. dieb13, bringing together their works as film directors and their activities as live musicians. Over the years, the two have directed and produced several experimental short films dealing with classical film genres like western, horror film or road movie. The films explore the inner mechanisms of well established cinematic conventions and turn them into an immediate sensual experience. TWIXT uses re-arranged footage of these short films as a score for a live soundtrack and fuses abstract and concrete imagery and sounds into a synaesthetical and synecstatical media-meltdown.

Billy Roisz and Dieter Kova?i? have been active in Vienna’s electronic, improvised, noise music and experimental film scene since the 1990s. Billy Roisz’s work focuses on the links and gaps between visual and auditive perception, using various electronic instruments, electric bass guitar, cathode ray tube TVs, video projectors, synchronators and sometimes computer to generate sound and image. Dieter Kova?i? aka dieb13, best known for his turntable music activities and as founder of the experimental music platform klingt.org uses turntables, self-cut vinyls and self written software for his musical works in many different fields. His film works include photo films (‘schnitzel’) as well as abstract digital and analogue works. Their collaborative film works have been shown at Berlinale, Karlovary Film Festival, IFF Rotterdam, Hongkong Film Festival, Edinburgh Film Festival and SXSW Texas, a.o.. They performed their audio visual projects live at Bienal São Paulo, Nya Perspektiv (Västeras), 25FPS (Zagreb), BAWAG Foundation (Vienna), FBI (Osaka), Suoni Per Il Popolo (Montreal), Sonic Acts (Amsterdam), Transmediale (Berlin), Sonica (Ljubljana), Unconsciuos Archives Festival (London) a.o..
