Dans mon travail artistique, je m'occupe de questions sociales et éthiques ainsi qu'esthétiques. En ce moment, des aspects tels que la jeunesse, la perte de repères, l'alcool, la dépendance aux drogues, les groupes marginaux et la violence jouent un rôle essentiel dans mes projets. A ce sujet, je m'intéresse également aux stratégies individuelles, personnelles et psychologiques ainsi qu'aux tendances sociales générales. Ce dont il est question est d'illuminer la vie des adolescents d'un point de vue subjectif et de prendre leur monde au sérieux avec ses règles, ses valeurs et ses lois. L'interface entre l'enfance et la vie d'adulte, l'adolescence comme une phase de la vie pendant laquelle l'identité propre est sans cesse questionnée à fond et pendant laquelle une grande importance est accordée aux idoles est au centre de mes préoccupations. "Breakdance" est un montage de rushes vidéo documentaires que j'ai fait en 2003 dans une foire. J'ai tout d'abord été fasciné par les couleurs fantastiques du "Breakdance", puis les adolescents, qui se sont rassemblés en groupes autour de ce fantastique manège, ont attiré toute mon attention. Une découverte accidentelle s'est transformée en une étude détaillée. La vidéo que j'ai faite à partir des rushes est complétée par une narration à la première personne en off : une adolescente se rappelle un été pendant lequel elle est restée à la foire avec ses amis. Elle raconte une vie faite de violence, d'aspirations déçues et d'une absence de projet.


In meiner künstlerischen Arbeit befasse ich mich mit sozialen, ethischen aber auch ästhetischen Fragen. Im Augenblick spielen Sachen wie die Jugend, der Verlust der Orientierungspunkte, der Alkohol, die Drogensucht, die Randgruppen und die Gewalt eine wesentliche Rolle in meinen Projekten. Diesbezüglich interessiere ich mich auch für individuelle, persönliche und psychologische Strategien und für allgemeine soziale Tendenzen. Es handelt sich um das Leben der Jugendlichen mit einem subjektiven Standpunkt zu beleuchten und ihre Welt mit seiner Regeln, Werten, Gesetzen ernst zu nehmen. Die Jugend, den Übergang von der Kindheit zum Erwachsenenalter, ist eine Lebensphase, in deren einerseits die eigene Identität ständig gründlich befragt wird und andererseits die Idole sehr wichtig sind. Deswegen ist die Jugend mein Hauptsorge. "Breakdance" ist eine Montage von dokumentarischem Rohmaterial, das ich 2003 während einer Messe gedreht habe. Ich war zuerst von den fantastischen Farben des "Breakdance" fasziniert. Dann erregten die Jugendlichen, die sich in Gruppen um diesen wunderbaren Karussell ansammelten, meine Aufmerksamkeit. Eine zufällige Entdeckung wurde eine detaillierte Studie. Das Video, das ich aus dem Rohmaterial gemacht habe, ist von einer Erzählung in der ersten Person aus dem Off ergänzt: eine Jugendliche erinnert sich an einen Sommer, wenn sie mit Freunden auf der Messe geblieben war. Sie erzählt ein gewalttätiges Leben, das mit enttäuschten Sehnsüchte und einem Mangel an Projekte ausgefüllt ist.


In my artistic work I deal with social and ethical as well as esthetical questions. For the moment, aspects like youth, loss of orientation, alcohol and drug addiction, social fringe groups and violence play an essential part in my projects. To this concern I am also interested in individual, personal and psychological strategies as in general social tendencies. It's all about lightening up teenagers' life from a subjective point of view and taking seriously their world with its own rules, values and laws. The interface between childhood and adult life, the adolescence as a phase of life in which the own identity is questioned in depth again and again and importance is attached to the orientation on idols stands in the focus of my interest. "Breakdance" is put together out of documentary videofootage, which I have taken in 2003 during a fair. At first the fantastic colours of the "Breakdance" fascinated me, but then the teenagers, who gathered in groups around the terrific roundabout, got in the center of my attention. An accidental discovery got to a detailed study. The video I made from the footage is completed through a first-person narrator from the off: a teenage girl remembers a summer during which she stayed with their friends at the fair. She tells about a life full of violence, disappointed yearning and lack of prospects.

Martin Brand est né en 1975 à Bochum, en Allemagne. Il apprend l'anglais et le latin à l'école primaire de 1986 à 1995, respectivement 9 et 5 ans. Il obtient son diplôme d'entrée à l'université en 1995. Il étudie les beaux arts et l'allemand à la Ruhr Universität de Bochum et à l'Universität de Dortmund à partir de 1996 et obtient ses diplômes en 2002. Il reçoit un soutien du Fonds Social Européen en 2002 et 2003. En 2003, il enseigne la peinture à l'Institut für Kunst (Institut des Arts) de l'université de Dortmund. Il reçoit un prix d'honneur au Kölner Filmhaus lors du quatorzième festival international de la vidéo de Bochum en 2004.


Martin Brand ist 1975 in Bochum geboren. Er lernte englisch 9 Jahre lang und lateinische 5 Jahre lang im Gymnasium von 1986 bis 1995. Er schaffte 1995 seine Aufnahmeprüfung an der Universität. Er studierte Kunst und Germanistik an der Ruhr Universität Bochum und an der Universität Dortmund ab 1996 und wurde Absolvent 2002. Er bekam 2002 und 2003 eine Förderung durch den Europäischen Soziafonds. 2003 lehrte er Malerei am Institut für Kunst der Universität Dortmund. 2004 bekam er den Ehrenpreis des Kölner Filmhaus als er an dem 14. Internationalen Bochumer Videofestival teilnahm.


Martin Brand was born in 1975 in Bochum, Germany. He learned English (9 years) and Latin (5 years) in grammar school from 1986 to 1995. In 1995 he passed the university entrance qualification. He studied fine arts and German in the Ruhr Universität Bochum and in the Universität Dortmund and he graduated in 2002. He received support from the European Social Fund between 2002 and 2003. In 2003 he worked as a guest lecturer on painting in the Institut für Kunst (Art Institute) in the Universität Dortmund. He received an honorary prize at the Kölner Filmhaus while participating in the 14th international video festival Bochum in 2004.
