In 1995 APSOLUTNO started
a project entitled 1995:2000 which is to last until the end of the century
and millennium. The project relies on the hyperbole which regards the end of
the millennium as something significant, alarming or thrilling.
Looking back into history, it can be seen that this obsession with the potentially
dramatic end of the century or millennium has been permanently present in one
form or another: as an obsession with the end of the world, with cataclysm,
with the Judgement Day and, more recently, with the expansion of black holes.
Whenever one prophesy failed to come true, a new version appeared with an even
more tragic vision of the end of the world. A great number of examples illustrate
this phenomenon: D'Orbigny points to 27 predicted catastrophes in the course
of history, while E. de Beaumont cites 32 such predictions (The Encyclopedia
of the Lexicographic Institute, Zagreb MCMLXIII ).
In the project 1995:2000, APSOLUTNO use calendar numerals as a signature for
their projects. Thus, all works created in 1995 were signed 1995 APSOLUTNO 0005,
those created in the following year were signed 1996 APSOLUTNO 0004 and so on.
The annual production of the association is related to the Gregorian calendar,
an arbitrary but widespread system of reckoning time. By signing projects in
this way, APSOLUTNO aims to emphasise the dramatic aspects of the coming encounter
with the end of the century and millennium. APSOLUTNO makes a subjective inventory
of events, ideas and influences that mark the last five years of the century
and millennium.
By exploring the 'absolutely now and absolutely here' APSOLUTNO aims to pose
questions, create metaphors and point to absurd situations and paradoxes brought
by the time we live in.
GOOD EVENING
1996 APSOLUTNO 0004
vidéo - 8'
This video refers to the 'evening' of the millennium and the impact of the media
on the experience of reality - questioning the way the media present information
as fact. The video adopts the recognisable framework of TV news by utilising the
first two words news presenters utter when addressing viewers. Transmissions from
the TV channels of various countries, involving numerous languages, were appropriated.

DEAD 1995 APSOLUTNO 0005 - KEEP OFF - ABSOLUTELY DEAD
vidéo - 7'15"
The
association has conducted an investigation of a death of two transoceanic liners
under suspicious circumstances. They are found in Novi Sad, Vojvodina, Yugoslavia,
between the 1,258 and 1,259th kilometre of the Danube. The ships lie parralel
to each other with their bows turned towards the south-west. The ships are 105
metres long and 16.2 metres wide. The main deck is 9 metres high on both ships.
Their cargo capacity is 5,700 tons.
There are no visible traces or signs on the spot which undoubtedly indicate a
certain cause of death. The position of the ships, as well as the place and time
they were found in, indicate an ABSOLUTE DEATH.
The investigation was conducted on 21 September 1995, from 6 pm to 9.30 pm.
