Ce film 16mm, entièrement développé à la main, a été tourné dans le Hirschgang Oberer, grande résidence universitaire de l'Akademie Schloss Solitude où l'artiste a vécu de façon intermittente entre 1998 et 2001. " Awake but dreaming " recrée une sensation de paysage de rêve cyclique et interminable évoqué par les profonds recoins de l'imagination. Aux images s'ajoutent des bandes sonores mystérieuses produisant d'étranges associations : un battement d'ailes, des cris perçants d'oiseaux, la décharge d'un revolver suivant des pas invisibles, une boîte à musique cassée jouant des airs oubliés provenant d'une enfance perdue. Une présence désincarnée plane et évoque une menace annoncée par une résonance sonore mais ne se manifeste jamais. Pourtant, le rêveur n'est jamais totalement conscient, même s'il s'attarde à plusieurs reprises à la périphérie d'une lumière et d'une ombre augmentées par l'alchimie. L'espace intra-utérin profond est un de ces lieux où tout peut arriver si le spectateur parvient à passer de l'autre côté du hublot de l'expérience.

This completely hand processed 16mm film was shot in the Hirschgang Oberer, an extended arched hallway at the Akademie Schloss Solitude, where she was in residence intermittently from 1998-2001. "Awake, but Dreaming" recreates a sense of an endless cyclical, dreamscape that is conjured up from the deep recesses of the imagination. The images are coupled with a mysterious soundtrack producing uncanny associations: the flapping of wings, shrill cries of birds, a revolver fired off following unseen footsteps, a broken music box playing forgotten tunes from a lost childhood. A disembodied hovering presence evokes a menace that is intimated through the sonorous resonance, but never manifests itself. However, the dreamer never reaches the apex of consciousness; only lingers repeatedly in the periphery of alchemically enhanced light and shadow. The cavernous intrauterine space is one of potentials where anything can happen if the viewer can enter the porthole of experience.

Kerry Laitala a étudié au Massachusetts College of Art où elle a suivi une double formation en filmographie et photographie et obtenu son diplôme avec les félicitations du jury. En 1995, elle déménage à San Francisco pour obtenir le diplôme de réalisateur de film des Beaux-Arts du San Francisco Art Institute. Durant ses études au Art Institute, elle a obtenu le 125th Anniversary Award et le Prestigious Princess Grace Award pour la réalisation de ses films. Ensuite, elle a enseigné l'animation, les méthodes de tournage des Beaux-Arts et la réalisation de films documentaires. Kerry Laitala attended classes at Massachusetts College of Art where she graduated with honors and a dual major degree in both film and photography. In 1995, she moved to San Francisco and attended the San Francisco Art Institute for her M.F.A. in filmmaking. While attending the Art Institute she won the 125th Anniversary Award and the prestigious Princess Grace Award for filmmaking. She has taught various classes in animation, fine arts filming, documentary film production, and has worked as a film restorer at the National Center for Jewish Film at Brandeis University. In the fall of 1998, she was awarded a nine month residency at the prestigious Akademie Schloss Solitude, an internationally diverse program in Stuttgart where all areas of the arts are represented. While there, she produced three installations using 16mm film loops and sound loops: Perpetual Chasm, Dissipation Between Here and Nowhere, and Trajectory. She also worked on several 16mm experimental films taking advantage of the darkroom to hand process and experiment with the alchemical process of film. These projects: Awake, But Dreaming, Conquered, The Adventure Parade have been shown widely. Grimm Enchantment and Bodyscope await postproduction funding. She has screened at numerous festivals internationally, and at present she is teaching the Motion Graphics class at the San Francisco Art Institute.

Une partie de mon éducation a été basée sur l'appréciation intense des vieilles choses. Avec "Awake, But Dreaming", j'ai réussi à creuser dans mon propre état émotionnel, à le projeter dans l'espace architectural de la résidence universitaire afin de créer une impression d'esprit désincarné agité. Je me tiens toujours à la page quant à mon travail, qu'il s'agisse d'un film ou d'une installation minutée, et je le laisse développer sa propre logique étrange avec sa propre force vitale. Mes projets deviennent ainsi des entités à part entière. Par l'utilisation de formes elliptiques, je permets à la structure de se déployer de façon organique car je préfère que les idées naissent selon un schéma non-linéaire. Je trouve les connotations littéraires très restrictives alors que mes images peuvent être interprétées différemment. Toutefois, je sais exactement comment fonctionnent les éléments et leur sens a une résonance qui pour la plupart touchent un large public. Mon travail s'effectue à plusieurs niveaux et aborde souvent des thèmes universels, mais ma motivation et ma passion n'appartiennent qu'à moi. Je devrais peut-être commencer par une vision d'ensemble mais les renseignements et les détails matérialisent, enrichissent et informent la surface du travail à travers la recherche, un dialogue continuel avec la matière qui veille et qui rêve. Dans mon travail, je fais en sorte que chaque élément (son, image etc.) ait le même poids et la même fonction dans la pièce. A cet égard, il est très important que chaque élément puisse voler de ses propres ailes. Je suis passionnément et absolument dévouée à mon travail et (hormis pour quelques collaborations) tous mes projets sont des essais en solitaire. Lorsque j'ai besoin d'assistance pour le " tournage " d'un film ou pour tout autre aspect de la réalisation, je fais en sorte de conserver le contrôle créatif. Mon incursion dans les royaumes du langage visuel et des labyrinthes acoustiques exprime mon besoin de présenter au spectateur un paysage de rêve primordial et pousse les sens à rêver. Je pense que ces explorations nous plongent au plus profond de notre existence et même, parfois, au-delà, (passé et futur) le cinéma ayant le pouvoir de remonter le temps. Depuis quelques années, j'essaie de m'immerger davantage dans le processus de création par l'enseignement. Cela m'a permis de trouver un certain équilibre entre mon moi créatif et mon moi actif. Récemment, on m'a proposé d'enseigner le mouvement dans l'art graphique au San Francisco Art Institute et j'ai dû travailler dur pour réussir à exprimer l'importance qu'il y a à créer des œuvres d'art dans un monde où la banalité et l'hostilité sont à l'avant de la scène. Je me suis engagée à transmettre à ces étudiants plusieurs stratégies de survie dans le but de les encourager à devenir des artistes productifs et autosuffisants dans le monde " réel ". J'ai considéré ce travail d'éducatrice comme un défi et mon souhait le plus cher est de transmettre à ses jeunes l'inspiration et la méthodologie dans le travail pratique, nécessaires pour créer des œuvres d'expression personnelle. J'éprouve un réel plaisir à enseigner, cela m'a ouvert les yeux sur ma manière de faire et de travailler et m'a poussée à exprimer les idées affluant dans mon esprit.

I grew up with an intense appreciation for old things. For "Awake, But Dreaming", I found a way to excavate my own emotive state, project it into the architectural space of the hallway, to create a sense of restless, disembodies spirit . I always hold my fingers to the pulse of my work whether it is a film or time based installation, giving it the freedom to develop its own uncanny logic with a life force of its own. Thus my projects become entities unto themselves. Utilizing elliptical forms, I try to allow the structure to unfold organically, as I am more interested in ideas that arise in a non-linear fashion. To my way of thinking, literal connotations are very restrictive, and my images can carry myriad meanings. However, I have a concise comprehension of how elements function so that their meaning has a resonance for many reaching a wide audience. My work functions on many levels and oftentimes exhibits universal themes, but my investment and passion is deeply personal. I may start out with a general overview, but the details and associations that materialize, enrich and inform the work surface through research, an a ceaseless dialogue with the material, waking and dreaming. I try to make each element in my work, (sound, image etc.) carry equal weight and functionality in the piece. It is very important for each component to be able to stand on its own formally in this regard. My commitment to my work is passionate, absolute, and (aside from collaborations), my projects have been solitary endeavors. In the event that I need assistance for a film shoot or with some aspect of production, I never allow the creative control to leave my hands. My foray into the realms of visual language/ and sonic labyrinths , expresses my need to introduce the audience to a dreamscape that is primordial and ignites a reverie of the senses. For me these explorations plummet us into the depths of our own existence and sometimes into other realms, (past and future) as the ritual of cinema allows one to journey back in time. In recent years, I have been increasingly committed to immersing myself in the process of creating through teaching. This has allowed me to obtain a sense of balance between my creative self and working self. I have recently been given the opportunity to teach the Motion graphics class at The San Francisco Art Institute, and have been working hard to get across the importance of creating works of art in a world filled with so much banality and hostility. To this end I am also committed to conveying various survival strategies to encourage students to be productive, self-sufficient artists in the "real" world. My commitment and dedication to being an educator has been challenging, and my greatest hopes are that I will be successful in passing on the inspiration as well as practical working methodology that is necessary to create works of personal expression. I derive great pleasure from teaching, which has informed my own process and work immensely, inciting free flowing ideas to be expressed.
